Call for Papers
The World Sustainability Forum 2011 (WSF-2011) will cover timely research topics concerned with sustainability and sustainable development. The conference will include six topical sessions focusing on:
1. Environmental Sustainability (Section A).
2. Economical Sustainability (Section B).
3. Social Sustainability (Section C).
4. Renewable Energy Self-Sufficiency (Section D).
5. Energy Return-on-Investment (Section E).
6. Governance & Sustainability (Section F).
7. Sustainability Assessment and Policies (Section G).
8. Remote Sensing for Sustainable Management of Land and Biodiversity (Section H)
9. General and Related topics (Section I)
This inter- and multi-disciplinary conference aims to examine, explore and critically engage with issues related to recent insights and advances in these topics. In particular, the conference will encourage both theoretical and practical debates surrounding environmental, economical and social contexts for those who want to go beyond the buzzword.
The conference will be completely free of charge―both to attend and for authors to publish―and is sponsored by MDPI and the scientific journal Sustainability. Selected papers will be published in the journal Sustainability.
The 1st World Sustainability Forum Conference will be held at www.sciforum.net, a new platform developed by MDPI to organize electronic conferences for scholars.
Please submit your abstract with max 2500 character (in English) by October 1, 2011. Abstracts should be submitted online at www.wsforum.org. All submissions will be reviewed by our scientific committee. For accepted abstracts, a full draft paper should be submitted by October 30, 2011.
Paper Submission Guidelines
Procedure for Submission, Peer-Review, Revision and Acceptance of Conference Proceedings Papers
1. Scholars interested in participating with the conference can submit their abstract (about 200-300 words covering the areas of manuscripts for the proceedings issue) online on this website until 1 October 2011.

sciforum-002179 | The Application of Economic Logistic Analysis in the Research of Financial Crises | N/A |
Show Abstract |
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Each economical cycle consists of a rise, peak, fall and crises. Year after year this curve has been studied by the scientists. It is attempted to explain the reasons of these phenomena, to foresee their range, to reduce the negative impact or to use the positive benefit of the range. Constantly repeated downturns, crises require new market researches and these researches help to develop theories that explain the crises. In this article both classic and new theories of financial and economical crises were reviewed and compared. The representatives of these theories are K. Marx, J. Keynes, H. Minsky, F Muth, R. Lucas, Blanchard, C. P. Kindleberger, F. Fama, R. Shiller, A. Johansen, D. Sornette, S. Girdzijauskas. The professor of Vilnius University, Stasis Girdzijauskas established a well-developed theory of logistic management of capital, which reveals the reasons of financial and economical crises, unnamed paradoxes in economy, innovatively evaluated inflations, the sources of other phenomena, closed and open markets and development of their capacity. The theory of logistic management of capital as the biggest problem emphasizes and indicates the filling of system capacity by capital, in which it is invested. It is shown that the economical downturns can be prevented by invoking the theory of logistic management of capital.
sciforum-002279 | Can Beef Cattle Intensification reduce Environmental Pressure on Brazilian Areas? A Case Study for Corumbá city (Pantanal Biome) and Mato Grosso State (Legal Amazon) using a Mathematical Model | , | N/A |
Show Abstract |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
The bovine beef cattle in Brazil are predominantly extensive, what turns great natural areas into grazing. An alternative to reduce the occupied area is to intensify cattle creation, increasing productivity, but it demands a bigger use of water and animals supplements, that are based principally in soy. The deviation of high quantities of water to economic activities can cause a shortage of it on the future, and intensifies cattle raising could mean an increase of soy production. This work realized a study using a mathematical model in fuzzy language to accomplish a simulation of two Brazilian areas in risk because of beef cattle expansion: Pantanal and Legal Amazon. The results indicate that the intensification strongly decreases the grazing areas, what theoretically reduces deforestation. However, analyzing the socio-economical context , the intensification doesn\'t solve the deforestation problem, because in Legal Amazon, it revolves around the estate speculation, not linked to beef production, and in Pantanal, the extensive beef cattle have caused less impact on environment, because it is developed by small creators that produce without going beyond ecosystem capacity. Besides, simulations indicate that intensification means strong pressure on hydrics sources.
sciforum-001933 | The Impact of the FDI Inflow in the "Agriculture and Fishing" Sector of OECD Countries on CO2: Some Empirical Evidence | N/A |
Show Abstract |
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
With reference to thirty OECD countries and a time-span of twenty-five years (from 1981 to 2005), we analyse the FDI dynamic in the primary sector and, more specifically, in the "agriculture and fishing" sector to observe whether and how its inflow generates a certain level of environmental impact, which can be proved to be statistically relevant. By referring to available data on pollutant agents such as Carbon dioxide (CO2) from fuel combustion, which is considered to be specifically linked to those activities typically run in the considered sector, and FDI inflow per country and per activity sector, we use the econometric technique of panel data analysis. Among the main results of the analysis, we find that the use of CO2 from fuel combustion in the agricultural sector does not generate statistically significant results with regard to the main relationship under investigation (that between FDI inflow in the "agriculture and fishing" sector and the considered pollutant), although some other meaningful and interesting evidences are achieved and discussed.
sciforum-001998 | An Assessment of Farmers Perception and Adaptation Strategies to Climate Change in Beposo, Ghana | , | N/A |
Show Abstract |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
This study analyses farmer\'s perception on climate change, their adaptation strategies in response to climate change and barriers to the adaptation process. A survey of 100 randomly sampled farmers was conducted using a standard questionnaire. An interview schedule was the main tool of data collection while descriptive statistics were the main analytical technique. Majority of the farmers studied perceived increase in temperature and a decrease in rainfall. In adapting to climate change, 91% of the farmers change planting dates, 86% use different crop varieties and 72 % implemented soil conservation measures as the major choice of adaptation techniques to climate change. Major barriers to climate adaptation are insufficient access to inputs and lack of credit.

The achievement of a less unsustainable future requires a multi-dimensional approach that addresses a range of \'issues\' (i.e. the sustainability indicator spectrum; demographics through to water) within a bounded yet diverse \'space\' (i.e. global through to local scale) over \'time\' (i.e. current and future generations; their needs and aspirations). Futurescenarios provide challenging, plausible and relevant stories about how the future, typically within 5 to 100 years, could unfold. As neither forecasts nor predictions and unconstrained by the requirement for substantiating how one gets from here to there they allow a range of sustainability issues to be challenged at different scales in future worlds. Urban Futures (UF) research has identified a substantial set (>450) of seemingly disparate scenario visions published within the literature over the period 1997-2011. Whilst it is evident that some comparisons have been undertaken there is little evidence to substantiate converging rather than diverging themes from which an overarching scenario archetypal could be drawn. This is significant shortfall for those who wish to test the principles of sustainability / resilience against a generic scenario set, rather than derive yet more scenarios to add to the list already identified. In fulfilling this research need it has been possible to identify, based upon their scenario narratives, a sub-set of 150 scenarios that can be categorised according to three world types (i.e. Business as usual, Barbarisation and Great Transitions) and six scenarios; two for each world type (i.e. Policy Reform - PR, Market Forces - MF, Breakdown - B, Fortress World - FW, Eco-Communalism - E and New Sustainability Paradigm – NSP respectively) first proposed by the Global Scenarios Group (GSG) in 1997. It is suggested that four of these (MF, PR, NSP and FW) are sufficiently distinct to facilitate active stakeholder engagement and allow sustainability/resilience to be tested over a broad range (e.g. high to low technological efficiency). Moreover this archetypal scenario set is accompanied by a well-established, internally consistent set of narratives that provide a deeper understanding of the key fundamental drivers (e.g. economic, environmental, social, technological, political and organisational) that could bring about realistic world changes through a push or a pull effect. This is testament to the original concept of the GSG scenarios and their development and refinement over a 20 year period. |
